Observe the body

Mindfulness is about reconnecting with your mind and body, and finding some space to be at peace with yourself. We'll be using the idea of simple techniques performed many times to cultivate an ongoing connection. This means that although the technique may seem obvious, it's the act of doing it repeatedly and with proper attention that is important. The benefits will become obvious later as we go deeper into mindfulness.

At this stage, we place our attention on the body at regular intervals. Notice whether it is tense or relaxed. Check in with your feet and hands - could they be more relaxed? Notice whether you are leaning forward or hunching your shoulders. Check in with the core of your belly - there is a core muscle here called the psoas. See if you can detect any tension there.

Perform this quick check-in at different points in the day - when you in a queue, walking along, working at your desk, commuting to work. There is no need to do anything at this stage - just observe the body at different stages through the day.
