Observe the senses
As we begin to investigate the idea of who we are, it can be a useful exercise to tune in to our senses and experience the world through them in a non-judgemental way. Begin by taking a simple, refreshing breath. Then:
- pay attention to sounds. Notice them coming and going, arising and passing away
- notice any smells. Observe how you respond to them.
- see if there are any taste sensations or flavours. Just be with the taste, refrain from exploring further.
- notice where the body is touching a chair, or floor. Feel the pressure and heaviness of the body.
- relax your vision and pay attention to the raw image information - colours, light, shade, movement.
Cycle through the sense one at a time. Spend a few seconds on each. Keep repeating for five minutes or so. If you find it relaxing, continue for as long as you wish. You find it more soothing by simply noting each sense as it appears in your awareness - hearing, seeing, smelling, hearing, touching, tasting, seeing.
